HYPERSONIC CONE DRAG AT HIGH ALTITUDE.

Abstract

The near free molecular flow of a slender cone at zero incidence in a hypersonic stream is studied. It is assumed that the cone surface is diffusely reflecting and has a temperature comparable to the free stream temperature. The nonlinear Boltzmann equation for hard sphere molecules is used and an exact expression for the drag is obtained. The result shows that the drag is reduced from its free molecular value. (Author)
