GYRO SPIN-AXIS BEARING PROGRAM.

Abstract

Gyroscope spin-axis ball bearings have met the most stringent performance requirements currently demanded of them. A bearing improvement program was conducted to increase the life of these microinch-tolerance bearings with even tighter performance specifications of future systems, as well as to realize a 50% yield of bearings so qualified. Work was performed in the areas of ball retainer dynamics and materials, ball groove finishing techniques, groove surface modification through prerunning and chemical coating, and lubricant types and control.
