A ROCKET BORNE AIR DENSITY MEASUREMENT SYSTEM UTILIZING ELECTRON-BREMSSTRAHLUNG-CALIBRATION AND FLIGHT.
Abstract
Calibration and flight of rocket systems for air density measurement in the range 100-200 km altitude are described. The systems use detection of bremsstrahlung from an electron beam to achieve this measurement. No density measurements were obtained because of failure of failure of the electron guns. Monitors in the payload indicate that, in two successive flights, current from the guns ceased almost immediately after they were opened. Possible causes for this are considered, and it is shown that cathode poisoning is consistent with all of the monitored data. Conclusions and recommendations for further work are given. (Author)
