CHARACTERIZATION OF AIR-TO-GROUND VHF AND UHF PROPAGATION MEDIA.

Abstract

The work reported here concerns the characterization of VHF and UHF propagation to and from an aircraft via line-of sight, satellite relay and tropospheric propagation media. The particular frequency ranges of interest are 118-150 MHz and 1500-2000 MHz. At these frequencies the magneto-ionic effects of the atmosphere upon communication signals are considered negligible. Only multipath mechanisms and additive noises and their combined effects upon signal characteristics are of interest here. The general principles of channel characterization that have guided the work performed are summarized, including the definitions of certain fundamental gross transmission parameters. The methods for measuring the essential channel transmission characteristics that determine digital (as well as analog) transmission performance are described briefly. The special considerations for A/G and G/A transmission are outlined. The important characteristics of line-of-sight, satellite relay and tropospheric propagation media are discussed. (Author)
