INVESTIGATION OF PARTIALLY COMPACTED WEIGHT OF CONCRETE AS A MEASURE OF WORKABILITY. REPORT 2. TESTS OF LARGE-AGGREGATE CONCRETE.

Abstract

The work reported herein constitutes a continuation of an investigation to develop a method for measuring the workability of mass concrete in the field. In this investigation, the suitability of the compacting-factor test as a means of measuring the workability of freshly mixed concrete is being studied. This test is performed by allowing a given volume of uncompacted concrete to fall freely through a given distance. The degree to which compaction occurs in this concrete is a measure of its workability, and the ratio of the weight of this partially compacted sample to that of a fully compacted sample of similar concrete is termed the compacting factor.
