TANK TRANSPORTER SEMITRAILER, XM793, TRACKPORTER.
Abstract
The US Army Tank-Automotive Command (TACOM) has developed a 16-wheel jointed-frame semitrailer to transport tracked vehicles. Some of these semitrailers have been procured by a foreign government and some by the US Marine Corps. The trailer can carry any US Army or foreign tracked military heavy vehicle, has a load capacity of 52.5 tons, and is low enough to transport an M60 tank under a 13.5-foot overpass. Axle loading under a 52.5-ton load is light enough (less than 25,000 pounds) for the trailer to be used on interstate highways. The trailer is designated the XM793 tank transporter semitrailer for US use and the M627A1 tank transporter semitrailer when sold to foreign governments. It can be towed by an M123-series 10-ton 6x6 truck tractor or any similar 10- to 25-ton tractor. (Author)
