SOME APPLICATIONS OF STRAIN GAGES IN AERONAUTICAL RESEARCH, FLIGHT TEST APPLICATIONS OF STRAIN GAGES (Quelques Applications des Strain Gages a la Recherche Aeronautique, Application des Strain Gages aux Essais en Vol),

Abstract

The use of strain gages in aeronautical research by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics may be classified in three broad categories: The direct measurement of strain or stress, in structures; the measurement of aerodynamic loads on aircraft in flight; in instrumentation such as miniature pressure transducers and wind tunnel balances. Specific examples of the use of strain gages in each of these applications are given and discussed. The advantages of the use of strain gages in flight testing are emphasized and enumerated. Recording systems and specific applications are described.
