PHYSIOLOGICAL STUDIES OF THE MARK IX MIXED GAS SCUBA.

Abstract

End tidal (alveolar) carbon dioxide was measured in two subjects at rest and during exercise while breathing the Mk IX mixed gas SCUBA. With a fresh gas supply of 6.84 liters per minute of 50% oxygen-nitrogen mix, the Mk IX permitted normal performance until strenuous (oxygen uptake of 3.0 liters per minute) levels of exercise were reached. The influences of depth and cold upon these findings were considered. When carbon dioxide absorber was removed from the Mk IX, mild exercise produced the rapid onset of potentially severe carbon dioxide retention. At rest, however, with a fresh gas supply of 6.84 liters per minute, there was no carbon dioxide retention, and only moderate carbon dioxide retention resulted when the fresh gas supply was reduced to 3.8 liters per minute.
