PROPORTIONAL CONTROL SYSTEMS.
Abstract
The basic objective of most engineering endeavors is to accomplish a stated objective with a minimum expenditure of funds, which in many cases reduces to using the simplest configuration that meets the requirements. The simplest control system is, of course, the proportional or gain-only controller. The design of such controllers for continuous systems using frequency domain concepts is well-treated in classical servomechanisms texts. However, the design of such systems in the time domain using minimum error integrals has not been so well-treated. This report discussed the design of proportional controllers for sampled-data control systems using the error integrals as a design criteria. Both the classical servomechanism (set point) and regulator (disturbance) problems are treated. Three different error integrals are used, with two different modifications to make them converge. Some advantages of proportional over proportional integral (PI) and proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers are cited. (Author)
