PROPOSED FLUIDIC-ELECTRONIC-MECHANICAL ARTILLERY AND MORTAR PD FUZE,

Abstract

A fluidic-electronic-mechanical (FEM) fuzing concept is proposed for high use rate artillery and mortar PD ammunition. This fuze design includes a fluidic power supply, electronic arming delay, and inertial switch sensors. Setback and ram airflow are used to provide safety and delayed arming. Target impact is sensed by either a negative or lateral acceleration; or, by cessation of ram air pressure. The fuze may be preset for either a superquick or delayed function, the delay being provided by electronic and pyrotechnic delay elements in a redundant configuration. This report presents a detailed description of the FEM fuzing system and its capabilities to replace all PD fuzes used in artillery and mortar applications. (Author)
