STUDIES OF COGNITIVE AND PERCEPTUAL PROCESSES IN INTERPERSONAL DEPENDENCE: A SUMMARY.

Abstract

When an individual depends upon another for advice in a simple choice-making situation, what kinds of perceptual and cognitive processes are associated with such dependence. This basic question was the foundation for a series of 14 investigations examining interpersonal dependence, in the form of imitation and related behaviors, of college students. The research focused on four major topics: (a) interpersonal attentiveness and imitativeness; (b) confidence as a cognitive process in imitation; (c) congruence of perceptual cues and imitativeness; and (d) socially aided concept attainment. The report summarizes the hypotheses, methods, results and conclusions of these experimental studies. (Author)
