OVERSTABLE MODES DUE TO RESISTIVITY GRADIENT.

Abstract

It has been shown that in an incompressible plasma sheet with resistivity gradients perpendicular to the main magnetic field overstable modes can exist. A criterion for overstability has been given. This criterion shows that the existence of overstability depends on the curvature of the curve of the resistivity. An approximate solution of the stability equation has been given. In the general case of an inhomogeneous plasma embedded in a constant gravitational field the region of neutral stability depends essentially on the resistivity gradient except if the plasma is homogeneous.
