MASS SPECTROMETER ANALYSIS AND TENSILE TESTING OF IRRADIATED MATERIALS FOR SATELLITE APPLICATIONS.

Abstract

Three types of sheet plastic material and a quantity of sealant, intended for use in satellites, were given an overdose of gamma irradiation while under vacuum. The quantity of outgassing was measured and the gas composition analysed using a mass spectrometer. The tensile strength of the plastic materials was also tested both before and after irradiation.
