AN APPLICATION OF A MODIFIED MASS SPECTROMETER TO SHOCK TUBE DIAGNOSTICS.
Abstract
This paper describes an experiment to determine the ionized species in the precursor region of strong shock waves produced in argon in a pressure driven shock tube. Theory shows that impurities may play a dominant role in the ionization processes. A quadrupole mass spectrometer was used in an attempt to determine the relative contributions of impurities. Thus far, however, the experiment has not yielded the desired results principally because of the effect of ultraviolet radiation from the precursor region on the ion detector in the mass spectrometer. Suggestions for correcting this difficulty are given with a discussion of the experiment. (Author)
