HEMODYNAMICS OF THE MESENTERIC CIRCULATION.
Abstract
The objectives of this project are to define the relationship between intestinal motor activity and blood flow, mesenteric circulatory responses to naturally occurring vasoactive agents, and the relationship between blood flow and intestinal absorption. The approach has been to use the intact canine mesenteric circulation and gut as the experimental model, measuring blood flow and pressures and intestinal pressure with transducers. Appropriate pharmacological agents were delivered directly into the circulation. Absorptive parameters were measured with standard technics. Intestinal motor activity in response to pharmacological agents is not related to blood flow changes. The mesenteric circulation responds to naturally occurring vasoactive agents in a predictable manner and exhibits autoregulatory escape. A canine intestinal model analogous to cholera (volumogenic diarrhea) has been developed. (Author)
