DESIGN, PRODUCTION AND EVALUATION OF IMPROVED CAST SHELL ALLOYS USING MATHEMATICAL MODELS

Abstract

The investigation attempts to implement a scientific analysis of factors affecting the properties of cast shells, design some improved cast shell alloys, and suggest how to produce these new products. Incomplete fragmentation data resulted in the redirection of this project towards an implementation of a scientific analysis of factors affecting the mechanical properties of ductile cast iron alloys. Two series of mathematical models are evaluated, i.e., Series 1, based on microstructural data and Series 2, based on alloy content data. Only the last four of the eighteen equations generated are significant at the 0. 001 confidence level, or less, and seventeen out of the twenty-four independent, elemental variables (71%) are in agreement with metallurgical theory. Since this investigation was based on a limited number of data sets, it is recommended that it be continued and expanded in the near future.
