CONSTRUCTION OF f/H MAPS AND COMPARISON OF MEASURED DEEP-SEA MOTIONS WITH THE f/H MAP FOR THE NORTH ATLANTIC OCEAN.

Abstract

Potential vorticity equations as derived by Welander are presented. These equations are compared with similar formulations used by Sverdrup and Stommel. Maps of the planetary vorticity divided by the depth of the ocean, f/H, are presented for the North Atlantic, and the South Atlantic Oceans. Current-meter and float record data has been collected, analysized, and compared with the current directions suggested by the maps. The agreement between the vertically averaged current directions and the directions suggested by the North Atlantic f/H-map mildly supported the notion that the transport of a water column tends to follow lines of constant f/H.
