OVAL CYLINDRICAL SHELLS UNDER LATERAL AND HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE,

Abstract

The report presents and analysis of the deflections of and stresses in a noncircular cylindrical shell of uniform wall thickness whose median-surface cross section is described analytically by a simple expression corresponding to a family of doubly-symmetric ovals. In particular, two problems are considered: a simply supported cylindrer under uniform lateral load, and a hydrostatically-loaded, clamped cylinder whose end sections are permitted constant axial displacement.
