THE DETERMINATION OF IONOSPHERIC RECOMBINATION COEFFICIENTS PHASE I: FEASIBILITY OF UTILIZING SOLAR FLARE-SUDDEN IONOSPHERIC DISTURBANCE RELATIONSHIPS.

Abstract

The possibility of determining recombination coefficients by utilizing solar flare-ionospheric relationships was studied. Information presently available regarding the phenomenology of solar flares was collected and is discussed, insofar as it relates to the ionizing emissions responsible for Sudden Ionospheric Disturbances (SID). The physical principles involved in the production of ionized clouds in the atmosphere by solar x-ray, Lyman-alpha, and gamma radiation are reviewed, including consideration of the normal D-layer, as well as the effect of solar flares. Previous studies of recombination coefficients are also considered. (Author)
