COMPTON BACK-SCATTERED (CBS) SOFT X-RAY SOURCE.

Abstract

Low energy X-rays can be produced by Compton back-scattering a laser beam off a beam of relativistic electrons. It appears feasible by this method to provide fluences sufficient for the study of the effects of X-rays on small material samples. The underlying principles of this X-ray production technique and estimates of obtainable fluences are presented. Several areas for further study and methods to enhance the X-ray fluence are indicated. (Author)
