ROCKET TECHNIQUES FOR MEASUREMENT OF ATMOSPHERIC DENSITY.
Abstract
The report details operational systems which were designed to measure air density parameters above regions investigated by balloons and aircraft. The air density measurements under this contract have been investigated principally by falling sphere instrumentation. A transit-time, omnidirectional accelerometer has been used in a 7-inch sphere system. Research and development of two 10-inch sphere accelerometers has been conducted, and the proposals for the Utah light-shell accelerometer and the Utah triaxial bridge accelerometer are presented. A Rayleigh scattered light experiment was another system which was utilized under this contract to conduct measurements of air density parameters. The scattered light experiment utilized rocket-borne optical equipment to detect Rayleigh scattered light from a high intensity mercury arc lamp onboard the rocket. (Author)
