A SIMPLE HYPOTHESIS OF INCOME DISTRIBUTION,
Abstract
The study began with the need to find the modal income in several American cities for use as an explanatory variable in another study. Contrary to expectation, income distributions within cities were not single-peaked; some distributions were single-peaked, some had two peaks, some three, and some had four peaks. This gave rise to the question: why did the income distributions differ. That is, what determines the shape of the income distribution in a given area. (Author)
