SELECTED PROBLEMS IN APPROXIMATION THEORY.
Abstract
Three projects were completed during the first of this two year research effort: (1) Results concerned with an Abelian and symmetric subring on a Hilbert space such that the commutant of the subring has a cyclic vector, (2) work involving applications of the above results to the study of representations of locally compact groups, (3) editing of the 'Proceedings of the International Symposium on C* algebras and their application to physics.' During the second year of this period several papers were written. Results were obtained concerning maximal ideals of the group algebra of a locally compact Abelian group. The results enabled the use of techniques of spectral synthesis to study the ideal structure in the group algebra. Various other results of Banach and Hilbert space theory were obtained during this period. (Author)
