A DESCRIPTION OF LASER-PRODUCED PLASMAS. II. MICROSCOPIC PROCESSES.

Abstract

Several experiments are described which, taken together, show that processes other than acceleration in transient electric fields are of considerable importance in the production of the energetic ions observed in laser-produced plasmas. Alternative mechanisms are proposed and analyzed and some of the microscopic processes which take place in the plasma are discussed. A consistent explanation of the experimental results, some of which are quite fragmentary, is provided. The need is pointed out for good time- and space-resolved experiments in order to gain a more detailed understanding of the processes which take place in laser-produced plasmas. (Author)
