DIFFUSION OF 51Cr INTO POLY- AND SINGLE CRYSTALS OF NIOBIUM.

Abstract

Using a microsectioning technique, the diffusion of 51Cr into niobium poly- and single crystals has been measured over the temperature range 947C - 1493C. Deviations from ideal Gaussian penetration curves were observed at lower temperatures, indicating possible short-circuit diffusion paths. Observations similar to these have been reported for Nb and Ta and are believed to result from structural defects in the crystal. The results are discussed in terms of current theories for impurity diffusion. (Author)
