PHYSIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY OF THE BROWN ADIPOSE TISSUE.
Abstract
Studies were performed to clarify the influence of various factors which might be involved in vascular regulation. Topical application of lidocain and treatment with reserpine effectively blocked, while denervation of brown fat, syrosingopine and atropine were ineffective to prevent the blood flow increase in response to cold exposure. The blood flow in brown fat is likely to be regulated by multiple factors. In vitro experiments were carried out in order to elucidate the mechanism involved in the thermogenesis of adipose tissues. High level of serotonin was demonstrated in the brown fat. The content was not affected by cold exposure and norepinephrine. Monoamine oxidase activity of the brown fat was elevated by chronic cold exposure, but not by acute exposure. Catecholamines are of primary importance in the regulation of active thermogenesis in brown fat, while serotonin is likely to play a rather subsidiary role in the presence of catecholamine. (Author)
