COMPARISON OF SCATTERED PORTION OF GAMMA RADIATION PENETRATING RIBBED AND PLANE SLABS,

Abstract

On the basis of a correlated Monte Carlo technique, a computer program is developed which permits the comparison of the scattered portion of penetrating gamma radiation for ribbed slabs and for the corresponding smeared-out plane slabs. Four source configurations are studied: normally incident, broad, parallel beam; broad, parallel beam incident 60 degrees to the normal; plane isotropic source; and a 'fan' source. The photon energy assumed is 1.25 MeV. Several thousand cases are analyzed, involving a wide variation of geometric parameters. The resulting data are approximated by an empirical formula, and values for the formula parameters are provided. (Author)
