AN EXPLORATORY STUDY OF METHODS FOR QUANTIFYING THE ANALYSIS OF HUMAN AGGRESSION,

Abstract

By means of a button response, subjects obtained from a college introductory psychology course were able to obtain reinforcement in the form of extra points. The subjects were told were competing with a rat whose lever press would place the subjects' response button in a locked condition such that points could not be gained. In actuality, the button lock-up occurred as a function of automatic programming equipment. A response to a second button would allegedly deliver shock to the rat and was defined as the agressive response. Extreme variability was evident between subjects in overall response rate, although the majority of responses on the shock button were made during the lock-up condition for nearly all subjects.
