NOTE ON THE ANALYSIS OF TWO DIMENSIONAL MOTION RESISTED BY COULOMB FRICTION.

Abstract

The effect of Coulomb friction on two-dimensional motions are studied experimentally in order to corroborate the theoretical analysis. In this report, a test arrangement designed to simulate different combinations of two-dimensional motions with Coulomb friction is described. The results of a series of tests are discussed; the tests include various combinations of motions, namely, a uniform velocity combined with oscillatory motions and two oscillatory motions whose lines of action are parallel, normal and at an angle between. In each case, the parameters which characterize the motion were measured (that is, friction force, velocity, etc.) The average power is determined from these data by a semigraphical method and compared with computed theoretical values.
