A STUDY OF THE BIOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF TRYPANOSOMA RHODESIENSE AND TRYPANOSOMA GAMBIENSE.
Abstract
A protective antigen(s) has been partially purified from crude extracts of Trypanosoma gambiense and Trypanosoma equiperdum by a combination of (NH4)2SO4 fractionation and DEAE-Sephadex column chromatography. The fractions in which the protective antigen(s) was found were identical for both species. The immunization of mice with this antigen lead to significant increases in survival times, and up to 100% of the animals were completely protected. Microtus montanus has been tested for its response to the African Trypanosomes. Outbreeding populations of this animal varied greatly in the type of infection observed, and in length of survival. Approximately 20% of all animals tested show a chronic type of relapsing infection (type III), and 43 percent show a typical white mouse or rat type of infection (type I, no relapses, death in 3 to 4 days). Rabbits infected with T. gambiense have been monitored over a 5 day period for changes in the number of trypanosomes, rectal temperatures and electroencephalographic patterns. Evidence has been presented that trypanosomes contain a pyrogenic substance. The role this substance might play in the pathology of infected animals is discussed. (Author)
