AN ATTEMPT TO CALCULATE THE HEAT BUDGET OF THE SEA OF OKHOTSK (Opyt Rascheta Teplovogo Balansa Okhotskogo Morya),

Abstract

Because the heat regime in the Sea of Okhotsk varies considerably with areas, the region is divided into 61 squares (2 degrees x 2 degrees) and the calculation of the heat budget is based on the prevailing conditions in the center of each square. To insure a greater degree of accuracy, the heat content is divided into its components, such as radiational budget of sea surface, heat loss by the sea as a result of evaporation, heat influx into the sea surface due to the condensation of water vapor, the thermal effect of convective-turbulent heat exchange between the sea and atmosphere, the effect of ice formation and melting, heat exchange through the La Perouse Strait, and other straits, etc. Since the magnitudes of the items vary also with the season of the year, their annual variation for each area is calculated. Graphs and tables illustrating the aspects show the amount of solar radiation absorbed by various areas of the sea each month, as well as the effective radiation, radiational budget, quantity of evaporation, the amount of convective-turbulent heat exchange with atmosphere, and other data characterizing the heat budget of the sea with time and space.
