THE LIVE SOUNDS OF THE SEA,

Abstract

The sounds produced by marine animals, such as mammals, fishes and crustaceans, are analyzed with respect to frequencies, pitch and other sonar characteristics. The various types of sounds, mechanics of their production, their application by marine animals for communicative purposes and their utilization by men, notably with respect to fishing, are also discussed. In line with this, the past and present investigations and findings by the Soviet, American, Japanese, Polish and British scientists relative to the sounds produced by marine animals in seas, oceans and aquariums are described and evaluated.
