THE CALCULATION OF THE CASPIAN SEA WAVES AND THE WIND OVER IT (Raschet Voln Kaspiiskogo Morya i Vetra Nad Nim),

Abstract

The study presents a compilation of characteristics of the Caspian Sea wave regime and wind. It is based on simultaneous instrumental measurements of waves and wind conducted in the Caspian Sea during the winter expeditions from 1952 to 1955, which were organized by the State Oceanographic Institute, as well as on special observations conducted by the Neftyanyye Kamni Station and on standard observations by the Bakinskiy Weather Bureau during the decade from 1947 to 1957. As a result, six major types of air transport over the Caspian Sea are identified, such as northwesterly, northerly, easterly, transitional, etc. and the pattern of their recurrence, duration and intensity. The relationship between the various aspects of wind fields and wave fields are determined and the corresponding wave field charts are constructed. The charts make it possible to determine the frequency and size of waves at various wind velocities and directions for the entire sea or given areas and to prepare wave forecasts. The paper is illustrated with thirty one tables, nine diagrams and sixty three charts showing baric, wind and wave fields in various sections of the Caspian Sea in various seasons of the year, as well as their frequencies, probabilities and patterns of occurrence.
