ON THE HORIZONTAL CIRCULATION OF BOTTOM WATERS IN THE BLACK SEA (O Gorizontalnoi Tsirkulyatsii Glubinnykh Vod v Chernom More),

Abstract

With the application of isobaric method the network of surface and deep countercurrents in coastal and abyssal areas of the Black Sea is outlined. The water layers involved in the horizontal circulation are delimited, pointing out the areal extent of currents, their major directions, interrelationships and velocities varying with geographical areas and depth. The existence of the so-called stagnant zones between the currents is determined. Also the deep local turbulences occurring in the Kerchenskiy proliv area, in the southeastern part of the sea and in the pre-Bosporus area are defined. In connection with it, the possible existence of a deep cyclonic turbulence stretching from southwest to northeast in the area where the shallow northwestern region is bounded by the deep depression of the sea, is suggested.
