THE COLOR OF MARINE POPULATIONS AT VARIOUS DEPTHS (O Tsvete Obitatelei Morya na Raznykh Glubinakh),

Abstract

The variations of different colors of marine organisms with depth are analysed relative to the degree and character of changes in hues, depending on the spectrum bands between the red and violet colors. Also the added effects of distance from the observer's eye and the relationship of the color of organism to that of water is taken into consideration. Thus, the effect of complementary colors is established. Finally, the visual impressions of colors observed at various depths are compared with the respective photographic records. The study is based on observations conducted in the Soviet Primor'ye belt of the Sea of Japan. (Author)
