MECHANISM OF THE VAPOUR-PHASE NITRATION OF ALKANES BY NITROGEN PEROXIDE,
Abstract
The following characteristic features of the mechanism of alkane nitration were observed: Being a branching chain reaction, the nitration of alkanes is capable of proceeding as a steady process simulating in this case an unbranching chain reaction in conditions where the break or discontinuity predominates over the branching. The formation of the chain in the nitration of alkanes is linked up with the formation, in the course of the reaction, of excited alkyl nitrite. The branching takes place as a result of the reaction of aldehyde with NO2 and instead of the usual formation.
