An Analysis of Lateral Echo-Sounder Records Taken Aboard the Bathyscaph Archimede.

Abstract

A lateral echo-sounding sonar, developed at Hudson Laboratories in 1963, was modified to fit into the compact sphere of the French bathyscaph Archimede. This lateral echo-sounder proved to be a valuable aid to visual observations of the Puerto Rico Trench during dives by the bathyscaph. The visibility during these dives was often hampered by ambient poor visibility and muddy turbulence created by the bathyscaph. This report presents some interpretations and correlations between the side-looking sonar records, and visual observations from the bathyscaph taken during the dives under Project DEEPSCAN. (Author)
