PROPAGATION OF VERY LOW-FREQUENCY CW SOUND SIGNALS IN THE DEEP OCEAN.
Abstract
A comparison has been made between measured transmission loss for 13-1/3 Hz cw sound signals propagated at long range over the Hatteras Abyssal Plain and transmission loss computed by use of the Hudson Laboratories Ray Tracing Program. Good agreement was obtained out to a range of 600 km beyond which the experimental data became unreliable because of low signal-to-noise ratio. Pressure amplitude versus range curves for two 13-1/3 Hz cw transmission runs made in opposite directions over the same track in the Hatteras Abyssal Plain have been compared. The runs covered a range interval between 40 km and 340 km, and five days elapsed between the start and finish of the runs. Good agreement was observed, at least in major features of the sound field, between the two runs. (Author)
