RESEARCH ON AEROTHERMOELASTICITY.

Abstract

The objective of the present contract was to investigate the dynamic stability of thin, orthotropic plates and shells under conditions of heating, loading, and external airflow. Such effects as large nonlinear vibrations, initially buckled states, parametric excitation, and damping were considered. Over the long term, it is hoped to gain greater understanding of nonlinear aeroelastic behavior. During the course of this contract five specific projects relating to the overall problem area were investigated. These consisted of theoretical characteristics of panel flutter at high supersonic speeds, vibrations of orthotropic cylinders, static and dynamic instabilities of pipelines with flowing fluid, dynamic stability of a pendulum under parametric and forced excitation, and nonlinear vibrations of beams. These specific projects, although inter-related, were all self-contained and technical reports issued on each of them, except for item (e) which is still being studied. (Author)
