FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS OF COMBINED PROBLEMS OF NON-LINEAR MATERIAL AND GEOMETRIC BEHAVIOR.

Abstract

A survey is first made of finite element analysis with nonlinear elastic-plastic and/or geometric behavior. Incremental stiffness matrices are then developed for the small strain large displacement analysis of combined nonlinear problems. The element stiffness matrices are obtained from the principle of virtual work. The theory is demonstrated with reference to a three-dimensional constant stress tetrahedron element. A general purpose finite element program for combined nonlinear analysis is then described. Case studies, using the program, examine the behavior of axisymmetric shells, flat plates and structures in plane stress. (Author)
