THE ORIGIN OF THE BAIKAL DEPRESSION,

Abstract

Baikal is deep, long, and comparatively narrow. A characteristic morphological trait of the Baikal depressions is its transverse asymmetry, an asymmetry that is markedly expressed along its whole length. The depression's precipitous northwest wall, on the side toward the platform, is formed by the great Obruchev Fault in the earth's crust, the vertical throw of which is as much as 2.5 km. The opposite, southeast flank of the depression is a more or less mildly sloped tectonic downwarping, which only at some points is complicated by horizontal thrusts and secondary fault scarps. The development of the Baikalian structure --- that is, the depression and its rim-mountains --- is still going on, at a rate that is not only not slackening but is even speeding up. (Author)
