REVIEW OF THE MARKET FOR THE SUPERSONIC TRANSPORT. METHODOLOGY AND SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS.

Abstract

In a previous study (1967) of the market for U. S. supersonic transport, estimates were developed of the SST market based on costs and performance characteristics of the SST and of competing subsonic aircraft. Since the 1967 study, the SST has been changed from a swing-wing to a fixed wing design. The estimated costs of operating the revised SST design are marginally less favorable than those of the previous design under some assumptions; however, current estimates of the costs of operating competing subsonic aircraft are also marginally less favorable than previously. The net effect of the evaluation of currently available information is that the market for the SST will not be materially changed as a result of the design change. Using modifications of existing methodology, this study developed forecasts of the market for the U. S. supersonic transport aircraft, at levels of traffic forecast for 1990. (Author)
