REEVALUATION OF NORMAL LABORATORY VALUES IN OFFICER TRAINING SCHOOL POPULATION,

Abstract

Normal values for blood in clinical laboratory determinations have not been refined adequately. A variety of factors are responsible, including differences in sex, age and nonspecific techniques. The purpose of the present study was to define the normal range for selected blood constituents by the methods used in the clinical laboratory at USAF Hospital. Blood samples were taken early in officer training and at the end of training. Automated assays were performed for serum blood urea, nitrogen, creatinine, alkaline phosphatase, uric acid, calcium, phosphorus, cholesterol, serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, and plasma glucose. The values obtained agreed in general with those in the literature except for the mean uric acid levels, which were higher. However, it was believed that these values were characteristic of the subjects studied. They were young males in strenous physical conditioning and on a high protein diet. (Author)
