MAST COMPONENTS INVESTIGATION--INSERT COUPLING OPTIMIZATION.

Abstract

Insert-type couplings for vertical masts are examined for optimization, considering length of engagement and wall thickness in the insert area. Forty coupling assemblies with these variables are tested in bending for nominal tube diameters of 3, 4, 5 and 6 inches and wall thicknesses of .065 and .083 inches. Test results show that length of engagement and insert wall thickness are critical factors in developing optimization data for these couplings. (Author)
