ATMOSPHERIC MODELING IN SUPPORT OF MICROSCALE VARIATIONS (II).
Abstract
Outline of attack on problem of mesoscale input to microscale variation. Spectrum of atmospheric turbulence up through mesoscale examined, with gaps in the variance or energy spectrum shown to be common at frequencies or wave numbers just below a particular input frequency. A model of mesoscale flow near the ground is developed to serve as an input to numerical flow models. This will ultimately accept microscale profile data as input for surface flow, allowing development and maintenance of discontinuities in the mesoscale flow, and development of a sudden change in the microscale flow regime. The model is used to compute effect of variations in microscale parameters (e.g., coefficient of friction) on mesoscale flow. (Author)
