REPULSIVE CORE AND INTERACTION ENERGY IN PROTON-PROTON SCATTERING,

Abstract

Interaction energy between two protons is computed from high energy elastic cross sections at 60 degrees and 90 degrees, using an optical model. The repulsive core becomes important for separation less than approximately 0.3 Fermi. Exponential dependence of high energy cross sections is shown to predict repulsive forces at small separation.
