RESEARCH ON HIERARCHICAL GRAPHICAL AND LOGICAL ENTITY MANIPULATIONS: TIME-SHARED DISPLAY SYSTEM.

Abstract

A special-purpose time-sharing display system is described. The system utilizes black/white and color drum-buffered scopes, light pens and pushbuttons to enable black/white and color console users to draw charts, diagrams, curves, etc., on the face of a display scope. The drawings contain information which is reduced to a condensed digital format called an entity table. This table can then be manipulated by the use of special-purpose software during the drawing action. Graphical information generated by either console user can be displayed in full color on the color scope. Output from interfacing data-manipulating programs can also be displayed. Although the programs reflect the hardware configuration of the Dynamic Experimental Processor (DX-1), the techniques used are applicable to other similarly-configured computer systems. (Author)
