RESEARCH INVESTIGATION OF ULTRASHORT LASER PULSES AND THEIR INTERACTION WITH MATTER.

Abstract

This report summarizes a number of research programs concerned with ultrashort laser pulses and their interaction with matter. Topics discussed include second harmonic generation, parametric interactions, two photon absorption, theory of picosecond pulse duration measurement, experiments with passively mode-locked ruby and neodymium-glass lasers, measurements of picosecond pulse duration and substructure, picosecond pulse compression techniques and other theoretical and experimental considerations relevant to the generation of short duration optical pulses.
