STUDY OF NUCLEAR SEEDED MHD PLASMAS.

Abstract

The characteristics of MHD working media are investigated from several different aspects. A new method for studying electron kinetics in plasmas produced by neutron irradiation of He3, the pulsed ionization chamber technique, is described in detail. Plasma production and loss coefficients for a range of helium gas pressures from 1-10 atmospheres are presented for steady state plasmas measured by this technique. The dynamics of the diffusion and recombination of ion columns are investigated analytically and numerically. The systematics of the formation of a guasineutral plasma in a hydrodynamic channel flow are considered. Also studied are the required nuclear properties of a reactor system for use with the nuclear seeding technique of MHD plasma production. (Author)
