PHOTOELECTRON SPECTROSCOPY FOR SOME AUTOIONIZED STATES OF MOLECULAR OXYGEN,

Abstract

Photoelectron spectra have been measured at wavelengths corresponding to several autoionized resonance states of O2 in the region above 775 A, and also at neighbouring off-resonance wavelengths. The off-resonance spectra show a single broad maximum in the strength of the O2(+) vibrational structure which is close to the energy corresponding to the adiabatic ionization potential. However, the resonance spectra have additional features which are characteristic of the vibrational quantum number of the autoinized resonance. The form of these spectra may be reproduced theoretically by the calculated Franck-Condon factors for the autoionizing transitions provided that the equilibrium inter-nuclear distance for the autoionized state is introduced as an adjustable parameter.
